Wow, here's another great photo! Baylor (number 12 in the photo but number 18 on the back) appears about to mash the ball, totally unfazed by the Angels batboy in the background playing fiddlesticks. On the back, they captured a headshot of Baylor right before he got smashed in the back of his head with a bat.
this is right in the midst of don baylor's lucky streak. with the red sox in 86, twins in 87, and a's in 88, that's three straight years in the world series with 3 different al champs. only one ring, though.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up I thought Don Baylor was pretty much the toughest guy in the world. Mostly because he would lean into inside fastballs and react about as strongly as if someone had hit him with a cotton ball. In fact, the only modern day player ahead of him on the all time HBP list is Craig Biggio, who doesn't get near the same amount of respect from me due to the Robocop elbow guard he used to wear. I hate those things. How do you stop a guy from diving over the plate when he's protected by a suit of armor? OK, I'm done.
ReplyDeleteI was happy when he was named manager of the Cubs. I thought this tough guy was just what the team needed. Instead, I am not sure where that tough guy was. What a disappointment here (although he certainly wasn't the only manager here to fail).
